From incorporating blogging into your curriculum, to using the futuristic pulse pen to help students take impeccable notes, ITSCO's Winter Courses offer a variety of professional development opportunities to help educators enhance their curriculum with the use of technology.

Face-to-Face Classes

Airliner*

Bring your iPhone/Touch to this class and learn about some of the new Apps for use in the classroom. With the App market exploding over the last year this is a good time to keep your “ears to the ground” on what is new and hot. Participants must have their own iPhone/Touch device to bring to this class. Each participant will receive an iTunes Gift Card to buy new Apps for trial in their classroom.

 

 

Capture, Upload & Share with the Flip Camera*

Learn innovative ways to create and use digital video in your classroom or learning environment. Participants will receive a Flip Video Camera and gain the knowledge needed to capture, edit and create their own video. We will discuss and ponder ideas of how to share and distribute these brilliantly created videos. What better way to ignite learner interest while enhancing and accelerating comprehension?

Google loves educators! Join us as we explore Google tools that focus on the core areas of 21st century learning skills: communicate, collaborate and create. Take a quick look at Picasa (a photo editing and online sharing application); SketchUp (a computer assisted drawing application); Gmail, and many of the Google applications: Docs, Calendar, Moderator, Reader, Earth, Wave, Trends, and Translate. Time will be given in the afternoon to create an iGoogle page, customizing it with gadgets, resources, and tabs for sharing with students.

 

 

Get Moving with Wii*

The Wii is a fast growing trend in Physical Education for exercisers of all age levels - from preschoolers to senior citizens. Find out how it works and how you could use the Wii in your school. Emphasis will be placed on movement to aid in instruction across the curriculum. Examples and statistics of success will be provided. Participants will receive the Wii console, 4 remotes, 4 nunchucks, and Wii Sport game. Let’s get moving!

Love the portability of a laptop? It just got better with Netbooks! All the functions you need, but smaller and easier to carry. Participants will receive an Acer Aspire One
Netbook PC, a fully functional mini laptop running on Microsoft Windows 7. Once participants become comfortable using the functions of their laptop we will then begin exploring the wonderful world of open source software (free!). Each laptop comes equipped with 1GB installed memory, a 160GB hard drive, webcam, built-in speakers, and external microphone.  All of this and it only weighs 2 1/2 lbs!

 


Podcasting for Ohio on iTunes U

Do you enjoy podcasting? or Have you heard the term and wanted to learn how to create your own podcast? We are offering a workshop that walks you through step by step to create your very own podcast. Once finished and all criteria has been met, you will be given the option to have your podcast featured on ITSCO’s Ohio on iTunes U as a Featured Educator! The podcast you created will be available for download and placement on an iPod or Mp3 device. What better way to spread knowledge to students, parents or co-workers?

Are you looking to tackle 21st Century Skills in your classroom? Why not jump right in with a thorough framework for 21st Century skills, outcomes and examples. Participants will learn the fundamentals of 21st century learning, characteristics of integrated lessons, and technology tools to get started. Hands on activities will be emphasized!


 

 

SMART Boards for Beginners

An ordinary whiteboard comes to life! SMART Boards are a hands-on tool that can take any standard lesson or presentation to the next level! A touch sensitive surface that is connected to your computer can make something as easy as a finger touch as useful as using a mouse. But don’t let SMART Boards fool you! They’re so much more than just an interactive surface. We will begin with the basics of your board; orienting, trouble shooting, and the tray tools. Do you understand the basic functions of your interactive whiteboard but want to take your lesson a step further and add more interactivity? We will begin by exploring the various tools in the toolbar, the Gallery and its many exciting applications, internet tools, and many more! Participants will then be taught how to build their own pull tab and/or create an interactive crossword puzzle. Plenty of time will be spent creating personal lessons. What is better than learning new content and walking away with a completed lesson?

 

Tools for Content Experts

Always looking for ways to stay at the forefront in your area(s) of expertise?  This class will introduce participants to a range of Web 2.0 tools to help you access, organize, share, and advance knowledge in your field.  Participants will learn about strategies to establish a “Brain Trust” using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and explore free online resources including RSS readers, News-Watchers, Google Tools, and powerful reference tools such as Zotero.  Whether you are organizing the resources that contribute to your professional expertise, or simply trying to locate a few resources for an emerging class project, these tools are designed to help you conduct faster and more effective research.



Wikis for Book Studies
(Online Class)

Join our book study! Each semester, participants will choose their own book to study and develop materials to use within the classroom. The course will cover Internet search strategies and resources; focus on state standards and literature activities; explore literary elements for the novel; and examine authentic modes of assessment. This course is open to anyone interested in studying a novel or planning to use the novel with students. It is also a great opportunity to take a class with a co-worker interested in developing a cross-curricular unit centered around the chosen novel. Participants are responsible for obtaining the book or unabridged audio file. Two semester hours of graduate credit is available for the online course through Ashland University for an additional fee. This course may be repeated for graduate credit (as long as you are studying a new book).

EdTechConnects conferences utilize the power of interactive videoconferencing to present ideas and success stories focusing on educational topics for the classroom.


Creating Video Content

Do you think you have what it takes to be a video producer?  Better yet, have you ever had dreams of sharing your videos across the world?  Today’s video users cannot only shoot video with low cost video cameras, but can also edit their videos using free software and other tools that can make their products look like the pros.  But today’s video users can now create that content and share it through online video collection sites like YouTube, TeacherTube and iTunes.  Learn how to step through the process of creating your content.  Learn what it takes to make your content accessible by your students, your community and beyond.  Best of all, you can do it all for little or no cost!
