Professional Development: Summer Academy

Building Curriculum Through Web 2.0

Announcing our seventh annual Summer Academy! Over the past few years, our students have embraced the Internet as a medium for social interaction. According to the Pew/Internet study Teens and Social Media, teenagers are using the Internet more than ever. “Some 93% of teens use the internet, and more of them than ever are treating it as a venue for social interaction – a place where they can share creations, tell stories, and interact with others.” The study goes on to say, “…that 64% of online teens ages 12-17 have participated in one or more among a wide range of content-creating activities on the internet, up from 57% of online teens in a similar survey at the end of 2004.”

As educators we recognize the learning opportunities offered and continually look for creative ways to tap into the power and flexibility of the many new Web 2.0 tools found on the Internet. So, what is Web2.0? According to Informationweek, “Web 2.0 is all the web sites out there that get their value from the actions of users.” Web 2.0 gives users a place to control their own ideas and interests. Some examples of Web 2.0 are blogs, wikis, social bookmarking and RSS.

This year’s Summer Academy, “Building Curriculum Through Web 2.0”, will focus on these Web 2.0 tools and how they may be integrated into existing curriculum. Participants will have the opportunity to work with the technologies as well as take part in an online learning environment.

The Academy will cost $325 for ATS members (check our website to see if your school district has ATS membership) and $650 for basic membership. All participants will have the option of receiving a certificate verifying up to twenty-five contact hours of High Quality Professional Development; or graduate credit is available for an additional fee. This Summer Academy is intended for neither the extreme novice nor the very proficient computer user. Rather, we are looking for teachers who would like to infuse their curriculum with new technology and who need a little guidance to help them think -- and ultimately leap -- outside the box.

There are three opportunities to attend a Summer Academy.

In addition, participants needing 2 semester hours (or 3 quarter hours) of graduate credit will participate in an online class to complete their final project.
